January Meeting Gift Exchange

Hey Keystoners,

The next meeting is in five weeks?  Why the advance notice???   Well, because of the ongoing confusion over locations during construction at the school, things have been a little off kilter.  One small impact was the need to reschedule the gift exchange, which is why you are getting five weeks notice for our next meeting!
How the gift exchange works:

Turn a piece to exchange with fellow members.

Bring the box in a brown paper lunch bag so nobody knows who brought what.

If you bring a bag, you get to pick a bag.  If you don’t, you’re out of luck, so bring a bag!

All of the bags  will be placed on a table.  One lucky Keystoner will be picked to pick a bag.  The person picking the bag keeps the piece in the bag.  The person who made the piece then presents it to the crowd and explains how they made it, finished it, types of wood, technical challenges, etc.  Then that person picks the next bag, and so on.

This Year's Project:

Project Choice 1) Surface augmentation - we have seen different example in demos and show & tells over the past year of various surface augmentation.  Examples have been texturing, carving, burning, etc.

Youtube has some videos that may give you inspiration (if the link doesn't work, google "woodturning texturing"  http://video.google.com/videosearch?hl=en&source=hp&q=woodturning+texturing&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=o9kiS7zWBIKolAfumpD4CQ&sa=X&oi=video_result_group&ct=title&resnum=10&ved=0CCgQqwQwCQ#

Project Choice 2)  Anything else - since we are announcing this gift exchange late this year, we don't want to lose participants because they only had 5 weeks to prepare.  But seriously, you are getting 5 week's notice!   Anywho, in the event that you can't complete a piece with surface augmentation, pick something that you can complete (or have completed) that you think someone would really appreciate.  Remember - it must fit in a bag!

The goal of the gift exchange is two-fold.  One is it's fun to give and get a gift.  The more important point is the chance to learn by trying something you haven't tried before.  Embrace the challenge and see what you can do!
The gift exchange is always fun to prepare for, fun to participate in and fun to attend.  So log off of your PC, and fire up your lathe!!!  You've got some turning to do!!!
Have a great Christmas, Hannukah, Festivus and see you in January!
